Starting with Colonial Charter 1.6 - The Forge Awakens, Iron can no longer be picked up off the surface by your laborers, or mined from a mine without processing. Iron is smelted from Iron Ore at a Small Iron Smelter, Forge or Foundry, or directly at a large Mine by using Furnace Fuel. If you would prefer to not have this changed, you can use the "Iron is Iron" mod in Kralyerg's Kave of Krazy Kontraptions.
Iron is used in the following processes:
Iron Tools are made by the Blacksmith, Large Smithy, or Rural Smithy using Iron + Logs.
The Forge and Foundry can make either Cannons or Iron Statues using Iron + Furnace Fuel.
The Forge and Foundry can also make Joists using Iron + Coal.
The Building Supplier can make Building Supplies from Iron + Glass + Lumber.
