Do you have any other Lumber or Firewood making buildings already working? Because of how the game distributes shared professions, even if you click on the building you want, it might allocate the worker to a different building.
Like if you have a Sawmill that says "1 of 4" and you have a Lumber Mill that says "0 of 1", if you go to your lumber mill and click the up arrow, it still might allocate the worker to the sawmill because it thinks you want more workers over there, and leave your lumber mill unworked.
