Infact, it might be a scale down of 75 %... just keep making that UV smaller until it looks right.

I think I did .5 like 3 or 4 times. You can see here anyway how scaled it is.

It still will not look exactly as you have it because the billboard texture changes the way the faces direct towards the point of view. Still missing the branches in winter though... not sure how to fix that. I'll keep playing tomorrow, kinda tired now!

I think we're getting there... you can tell because the dude in the green top spent all year admiring these bushes.

I've managed to get the branches to barely show up in winter, they needed a better AO (I had to bake new ones because I had messed up the unwrapping did it all again). I think the detail in those branch textures might be too fine and the brown texture too faint to see them well, you might want to thicken the branches up a bit to keep seeing them in winter. If you look at the vanilla trees, the branches are really thick.

It seems that with the billboard material, it won't let you use any other material on that model, the game crashes. With my spruce trees I have foliage material for the leaves/branches, and normal model material for the bark making the tree trunk. This works fine. However if I try to either make the branches in these models a normal material, or a foliage material, it builds fine but the game crashes when you click on the icon to build and bring the mesh into view. It only seems to accept all billboard materials (out of the combinations I have tried).

you did alot better <a contenteditable="false" data-ipshover="" data-ipshover-target="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/5518-necora/&do=hovercard" data-mentionid="5518" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/5518-necora/">@Necora</a> you did very great!!!!

you took alot of time working on this, and i thanks you alot !

but how we can with this billboard thing we can make something loooking exactly like you want when you have to shrink the 80-100 planes into microscopic size and hope when it gets back it was exactly where it was ? /shrug

i think Luke was still bad in graphic and came up a shitty very bad way to make what he wish, to make this thing...

and he done the code behind it to make it work lol

i would say stop there on this mesh , unless you will want to learn all the exact process of all this billboard technic.

and share your experience /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />

i think i ve getting it , all the works you've done and the results of each things you've learn through all this process...

i kinda understand i need to start over with new textures. New texture which represent a bigger picture of all a "branch" should work. i aimed too much down to a single leaf and thats the problem. i need to aim for a better .png. Something that will rather represent a whole branch instead of a single leaves.

in that way also, it will cut the number of planes in the mesh. i noticed that number of place is more than a pain when it is time to pick up all those leaves and shrink them down; and hoping once it has been billboarded it represents what we figured for. ^^ Also because too many , make it hard to see the trunk, the branches, and the leaves itself. it is just a mess to try to work with that.

so i am starting over, and try to use all your work /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />

i really thank you. You made us ALL learned so much !! <3

Edit: here will be my new .png /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" /> it represent more a full branch. i've been able to put the texture of the trunk and 3 type of branches adding some more natural shadows.

and that way i wont have to multiply the number of leaves by 3X for 3x darker colors, and a each has a dozen of the "leaves.png" i had. i think it is more intelligent from me to work with that instead /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />

Edit2: i also did a new "trunk" with full 3D. everything has been "assembled" with the compound method i shown on WoB and it is made from 1 single piece easy to pickup.

<a contenteditable="false" data-ipshover="" data-ipshover-target="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/3183-ketchup/&do=hovercard" data-mentionid="3183" href="<___base_url___>/index.php?/profile/3183-ketchup/">@Ketchup</a> I can't wait to see how it comes out. I'm glad we are making progress! It is useful knowledge for improving my trees, which is something I've been meaning to do for a while now.

I actually liked the single leaf texture, but you are right it does produce a lot of faces for such a small mesh. I think the new one will work just as well, or even better. I think I need to do the same with the trees, I went for too fine detail and it just comes up a thin blur in game rather than nice full branches.

With regards to selecting all faces, in blender I found that if you go to the material menu, you can choose a material, say the branch material, and click 'select all' which will select only all faces which have that material assigned to it. I don't know why I never did this before. Then there is an option to change the way the objects are transformed in relation to each other. I usually use 'mean point' which is roughly the middle of all selected vertices, fine if you are doing 1 face or cube, but when you scale a lot together they all shrink into the middle. You can change this to 'individual origins' which means they stay in the same position and shrink in relation to themselves rather than in relation to the whole selection. Those two tricks meant that I could scale all of the leaves in just 2 clicks while leaving the branches alone.

I think trees have been the most, disappointing, of all of the things I have done so far. It is something to do with the different leaf materials in the mod kit, they mean that the trees never look as good in game as they do in blender. I think it is just a lot of trial and error, and going through things like we did last night helps to figure out the things you need to play with.

i agree with all this /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />

also the fact we work on 2 different program doesnt help neither. both programs have things totally different when it is time to do operations and the way we want to make things and tell the other ^^

moving with the wind - Ketchup - 03-18-2017

HA!

know what ?? you dont even have to shink all the planes to nothingness before starting to play with the channel 3 !!!!!!

i discovered it through a trial of an error ... an oversight lol

so once mesh done, i did the chan 2 with no change, just created it . and then i created the chan 3. and i completly forgot to shrink all the planes to 10% ....

so i ve put the tree at 0,0 and then the leaves at 0,0 with 1 chess square high...

and i exported, compiled and launch a game !

and everything was at 98% perfect.... everything swing with the wind.... the leaves completly 100% changed color in autumn ... the leaves completly 100% disappear from game ... the trunk stay there (it swing with the wind where is my 2% minus left of perfection ^^) and in spring , all the leaves reappear and comback !!

woot !!!!

i need to figure out while my trunk is swinging though /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />

EDIT: i guess it is because i didnt shrinked the tree enough in the 0,0 corner /emoticons/tongue@2x.png 2x" title=":P" width="20" />

cause now the trunk isnt moving at all anymore /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" /> and stay put perfectly hehe

i need to go back to the bush2 and see how it does /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />

Edit well i guess these old bushes arent good enough. it was looking great as they were but there are some of the leaves dont disappear /emoticons/sad@2x.png 2x" title=":(" width="20" />

gonna garbage them /emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />
